The Areas of Consciousness
Introduction
This month's article and those of the coming few months will be concerned with what we are calling
the 'astrology of transition' i.e. transition from conventional Western horoscopy to esoteric astrology or the
astrology of the soul. The focus of the 'astrology of transition' is the personality which is seeking alignment
with the soul. Most people consciously walking a spiritual path are struggling to achieve this alignment.
In the past 9 months alone, in addition to postal work, The D.K. Foundation has given over 100 one-on-one readings.
This way of working ensures that an astrologer remains in touch with what that struggle means in the lives of contemporary
westerners. The Foundation works with concepts which are designed to assist alignment by increasing awareness of
self and purpose.
Included in these concepts are the areas of consciousness which create three groupings from the twelve houses of
the horoscope. These three areas express, on the planes of personality, the three divine aspects.
| House |

| I - IV inc. |

| V - VIII inc. |
Relating consciousness |
Second |
| IX-XII inc. |
Universal consciousness |

The areas of consciousness superimpose unity upon the detail of the constituent houses and bring in, through correspondence,
the three divine aspects:
- Houses I-IV are related to the Father aspect; to spirit; to life
- Houses V-VIII are related to the Son aspect; to soul; to quality
- Houses IX-XII are related to the Holy Ghost; to matter; to appearance
If the above classification contains surprises then it should be remembered that the personality
is the first aspect of the soul and the vehicle of its manifestation on a lower plane.

Houses IV; VIII; XII are composite houses. They are houses where awareness is assembled. In each
case, the awareness assembled is that of the kind of consciousness developed by the areas of consciousness to which
they belong and which is fruit of experience in the constituent houses , i.e. the awareness of:
- House IV is the awareness of the separated self
- House VIII is the awareness of the relating self
- House XII is the awareness of the universal self
These three aspects of awareness create the three permanent atoms of the causal body.
The position of the Sun in the natal chart indicates the area of consciousness in which a person needs to be developing
in the present lifetime under the supervision of the soul (Ascendant and ruler); the Moon and Saturn indicate the
kind of consciousness developed in past life.
The areas of consciousness are of themselves no guide to the level of development. Whilst it is the case that universal
consciousness is closer to soul consciousness than that of the other two areas, and whilst it is the case that
the consciousness of the separated self becomes soul consciousness by passing into relating and then universal
consciousness, anyone involved in astrology must be aware of the cyclical nature of development. Houses IX to XII
can be the host to a personality which has yet to individuate, as well as to the individual developing universal
consciousness.
It is configurations of planets in signs which give the most reliable horoscopical evidence of level of development,
not planets in houses. The areas of consciousness have a value in that they impose a principled superstructure
upon the diversity of the twelve houses and emphasize the developmental purpose underlying experience in any of
these areas of life.
