Aquarius

These notes are based upon the teachings of Djwhal Khul, presented in Alice Bailey's Esoteric Astrology (Lucis Trust, 1951).

It is the work of the zodiacal influences to evoke the emergence of the will aspect of the Heavenly Man and of all monads, souls and personalities who constitute the planetary body of expression....

The goal of evolution for humanity is to become consciously and livingly aware of the nature of these energies and begin to know them and to use them.

AQUARIUS

NEW MOON -16 DEGREES AQUARIUS 5TH FEBRUARY 2000

[In Aquarius] the individual becomes the universal. Man, alone and separative, becomes mankind in his reactions and awareness and yet, at the same time, preserves his individuality; he is no longer just a human being, individually self-centred and separative, but becomes humanity itself, losing his personal identity in the good of the whole yet retaining his spiritual Identity.

The sign of Aquarius is of supreme importance to our solar system at this time of entering the Aquarian Age. The influence of Aquarius is gaining in momentum and potency. Because Aquarius is an air sign its influence is all-pervasive and interpenetrating.

Aquarius is pre-eminently a sign of constant movement, changing activity and recurrent mutations. The glyph (like two waves or two currents of electricity) symbolises this state of activity. Like the glyph, Aquarius experiences both the valley and the mountain top. The results of the valley experience and of the mountain top with its vision and light, are very vividly depicted by Aquarius. The Aquarian can experience the depths of depression and of self-depreciation or he can know and pass through the exaltation of the soul and the sense of spiritual power which soul control gives, and know them to be the interplay and the action and reaction which are necessary for growth and comprehension.

Aquarian awareness potentially relates and binds things together into a synthetic whole; it recognises the bond that exists between seemingly disparate things. It is in Aquarius that substance and the imprisoned soul1 begin to work mutually; in a higher expression of Aquarian energy, soul and spirit are expressed through substance (bringing humanitarian vision into the world of manifestation).

If in Leo (the polarity of Aquarius: its opposite sign) the personality orientation is selfish, in Aquarius it is outgoing. Aquarius is consecrated to group service and the welfare of humanity. This noble expression of Aquarius depends upon a certain level of awareness and spiritual context. The 'average' Aquarian, lacking such a context, will express outgoing energy through such things as great loyalty to the company for which he works, confining all his interests within its limits.

The average Aquarian puts all his wares in the shop window and there is little behind it. The Aquarian with developed awareness correspondingly puts all the water into the pot and stores it for service, giving it freely on demand wherever it is needed. So the superficial awareness that matures in Leo (which leads to deep-seated self-consciousness and a profound interest in self) must be consummated in the vision and humanitarianism of Aquarius, resulting in a deepening of qualities. The intensive self-consciousness of Leo must expand into the group consciousness of Aquarius. The individual thereby becomes universal.

The three keynotes of Aquarius are

  • the service of the lower self eventually transmutes into the service of humanity;
  • superficial and selfish activity changes into the deep intention to be active on behalf of the Hierarchy;
  • self-conscious living transmutes into sensitive humanitarian awareness.

A petty, superficial nature can, through Aquarius, develop into a nature guided by deep purpose and profound conviction.

The orthodox ruler of Aquarius is Uranus, 'that mysterious and occult planet'. Uranus is the great liberator. It motivates, through spontaneous and unpredictable activity, evolutionary development, both natural and spiritual. Uranus 'is the urge to better conditions', the ambassador of the right direction. Uranus is the cause of a great transference in human consciousness from intellectual perception to intuitive knowledge.

Aquarius governs the blood system and the circulation: it is the distributor of the life force, which 'is symbolic of the task of the liberated Aquarian who dispenses spiritual life throughout the Fourth Kingdom2 in nature'.

It is a fact of great importance to the Aquarian Age that the will is focused by Uranus. Uranus represents leadership in this matter and brings about the changes necessary to the soul of humanity being expressed more freely:

Opportunity -- Illumination -- Brotherhood: these are the gifts that Shamballa3 is planning to confer upon mankind during the Aquarian Age, if man will but prepare for them, accept them, and use them.

1 The soul is both imprisoned and isolated by the selfish perspectives of the personality.

2 The human kingdom

3 Shamballa is the planetary head centre. Shamballa receives energy from the Suns and constellations of the Milky Way; it distributes energy to humanity by means of the zodiacal signs and is concerned with the development of spiritual will
