Gemini

These notes are based upon the teachings of Djwhal Khul presented in
Alice Bailey’s Esoteric Astrology (Lucis Trust, 1951).

It is the work of the zodiacal influences to evoke the emergence of the will aspect of the Heavenly Man and of all monads, souls and personalities who constitute the planetary body of expression. …
The goal of evolution for humanity is to become consciously and livingly aware of the nature of these energies and begin to know them and to use them.

GEMINI

NEW MOON 12 DEGREES GEMINI 2ND JUNE 2000

Fluidity, recognition of duality, soul control! These are the keynotes of this sign, and should be the keynotes of our lives, for whether we are in this sign in this life, it has at some time conditioned our experience and the results are marked in the life of the advanced disciple.

In Esoteric Astrology, we are told that the constellation of Gemini and its Ray II influence control every one of the pairs of opposites in the Great Wheel of the zodiac. This means that the energetic influence of Gemini is active to a high degree in all the signs. Gemini helps us to identify and resolve the polarities in the zodiac by creating a triangle with opposing signs. For example, when dealing with the Sun in Leo we look to the opposite sign, Aquarius, and to Gemini in order to interpret the horoscope (see Endnote 1). In the case of the Sun being in Gemini, we look to Sagittarius and, to provide the balancing force, to Pisces (marking beginnings and endings, Alpha and Omega).

Therefore, Gemini supplies a force of profound significance as the ‘constellation of the resolution of duality into fluid synthesis’, because the problem of duality (and the concomitant quality of consciousness marked by separativeness/separation) is one that characterises our experience on Earth:

Governing as it does all the pairs of opposites in the zodiac, [Gemini] preserves the magnetic interplay between them, keeping them fluid in their relations, in order eventually to facilitate their transmutation into unity, for the two must finally become One.

Gemini, potentially, brings us from an awareness of the twelve signs in opposition to, by ‘fusion of consciousness’, the blended six. As Gemini and its primarily Ray II influence of Love-Wisdom is at work behind all the signs of the zodiac, the occult teaching that love underlies the entire universe (God is Love) can be understood. The underlying love of the Deity reaches our solar system primarily through Gemini (which forms with the Great Bear and the Pleiades, a cosmic triangle - the triangle of the Cosmic Christ).

The glyph for Gemini expresses duality (the two uprights of the glyph) and fusion (the two are connected at top and bottom creating one unit). Compare this with the glyph for Pisces. Duality is still in evidence in Gemini but it is the task of Venus (as the esoteric ruler of Gemini) to ‘reunite the severed lives but with no binding thread’ (the thread itself is severed by Pluto in a Piscean phase. see Endnote 2).

Gemini is conventionally seen as the sign of the Twins; the two lives that are referred to (Castor and Pollux in the constellation) have their correlatives in all the sets of dualities that Gemini is working to synthesise and resolve. Of great significance at the individual level is the duality between self and not-self, mind and body, soul and personality, spirit and soul. In Gemini upon the reversing wheel the personality dims and the light of the soul waxes.

Gemini is one of the four signs of the Mutable Cross (including also Sagittarius, Virgo and Pisces) and, in this world phase, it determines the paramount influence upon that Cross. The objective of the Mutable Cross is to bring about ‘conditions which will produce great periods of change in the life of the planet, of a kingdom in nature or of a human being’. It is characterised by constant flux and change, which provides experience for the unfoldment of consciousness. All the constellations on the Mutable Cross mark points of change, being custodians of energies that lead to needed reorientation and preparation for fresh developments. Gemini, however, particularly, conveys the force which produces changes needed for the evolution of Christ consciousness.

Three constellations involve ideas of opposition-equilibrium-synthesis: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

  • Gemini forms a point of entrance for cosmic energy from Sirius
  • Libra is related to and transmits the potencies of the Pleiades
  • Aquarius expresses the universal consciousness of the Great Bear

This triangle of force links all the Cosmic Crosses (Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable) together.

  • The Mutable Cross produces periods of change (for the planet, for nature and for the individual). Mercury plays a major part in this.
  • The Fixed Cross produces unavoidable points of crisis that lead to opportunity. Saturn plays a major part in this.
  • The Cardinal Cross produces points of synthesis as the consequence of change and crisis. Jupiter plays a major part in this.

Gemini is related to the etheric body: the custodian of conditioning energy; intermediary between the body and the soul. The etheric body is a transmitter and resolver of dualities, just as Gemini is:-

  • In the average individual, the etheric vehicle is a transmitter of psychic energy, galvanising and co-ordinating the dense physical body, thereby permitting astral and mental control of the personality.
  • In the disciple (on the reversed wheel), the etheric body becomes the transmitter of soul energy, and not of personality force. Ray II begins to dominate the vital body leading to a shift of force and intensity to the higher chakras (the centres above the diaphragm: heart, throat, brow and crown). With this shift, personality power wanes and soul power waxes.

Gemini is pre-eminently the sign of the messenger; it has produced many messengers of God down the ages, intermediaries between the Kingdom of Humanity and the Kingdom of Souls. The orthodox ruler of Gemini is Mercury, messenger of the Gods, who as ‘divine Intermediary, carries messages between the poles with speed and light’. Mercury is an expression of the dual aspect of mind as it mediates between higher and lower. This mediation by Mercury occurs in two stages (both reflecting qualities of the Gemini individual) leading to a third:-

  1. Use of the concrete mind as mediator within the personality, analysing and distinguishing between self and not-self (‘me and thou’ / personality and environment consciousness).
  2. Carrying messages between the soul and the brain, establishing right relation between lower and higher self (the illumined mind relating soul and personality).
  3. When these two processes are perfected, a third aspect of Mercury begins to function as the abstract mind which, removed from form contact, is now involved in relating soul and spirit (see Endnote 3).

Mercury reveals the Spiritual Triad (of spiritual will, spiritual love and the higher mind) to the soul, carrying disciples to the Third Initiation. Therefore, Mercury at work in Gemini subjects increases the latent sense of duality, mental agility and fluidity of mind which are the major assets and major difficulties of the sign. Where there is this mental facility and connection with the many opposites in manifestation, there is the emergence of the divine messenger, able to comprehend extremes and relate them to each other. The difficulty is, of course, in handling such fluidity and range, and Gemini people often find themselves fluctuating between extremes with frayed nerves; their versatility of mind readily produces over-stimulation, argumentative behaviour and garrulousness.

Mercury is a star of conflict for it governs and engineers the interplay between Earth and the conditioning constellations. Through Gemini it relates Earth (the hierarchical ruler of Gemini) to Virgo (Mutable Cross), of which it is the orthodox ruler, Aries (Cardinal Cross) of which it is the esoteric ruler and Scorpio (Fixed) of which it is the hierarchical ruler:

Through the medium of this inter-relation and consequent intercourse, the three cosmic Crosses become closely related and, in Gemini, certain of the fundamental zodiacal influences … are focused upon our planet. This produces strain, action and reaction, and that condition of potent struggle and of difficulty which is so characteristic of our planetary life, but which produces eventually the awakening of humanity to full planetary consciousness.

Venus is the esoteric ruler of Gemini. Gemini, being the third sign, embodies ‘third potency’, enabling it to reach the Third Kingdom (of animal life) and produce that reaction which leads to individualising and humanising tendencies. It is the influence of Venus through Gemini that leads to human individualisation; considering that Venus is the hierarchical ruler of Capricorn, we are thus shown Venus in connection with the two major human crises: individualisation and initiation. Venus’s potency resides in relating the Kingdom of Animals and the Kingdom of Souls (soul and form combining in humanity). Due to its ability to relate opposites, Venus is erroneously connected with sexuality and the forces of male and female.

Venus, it should be remembered, is Earth’s alter ego, supplementing and complementing it; Venus is sacred, the Earth is not. The two resemble the Twins: Earth is the brother whose light is waning (the personality), Venus the brother whose light is waxing (the soul). It is this Gemini-Venus situation that lies behind the fact that Earth is ‘uniquely the “planet of releasing sorrow and of purifying pain”’, i.e. through the combined forces of Mercury and Venus.

Through its various planetary influences Gemini conveys six of the seven rays. It does not convey Ray VII (Ceremonial Magic), which accounts for the frequent failure of Gemini people to express beauty, ideals, etc., on the physical plane. However, the six potencies that do meet in Gemini explain the versatility and sociability of the Gemini person: they find points of contact with other people on nearly every ray.

There is a tendency to struggle which characterises this sign. This is due to the conflict of the evolutionary process and conflict upon the Path. There are two aspects to this struggle: unconscious (under the direction of form - the Moon), and conscious (under the direction of the soul).

Gemini rules the arms and hands, indicating the services the two brothers must render to each other in producing dissolution (under Pluto) of the separative relation existing between them for so long. Gemini also governs oxygenation of the blood leading to life activity and the free interplay and circulation of the spirit-soul aspect in all organisms:

Where there is the free flow of the life force and no impediment to the circulation of the life fluid, via the blood, there will consequently and normally be the presence of perfect health.

Gemini rules also the nervous system and fluid reactions of the entire nervous organism. Hence, through Gemini is the tendency to eventual control of two aspects of soul:

  • the life aspect seated in the heart and using the bloodstream as its mode of interplay and life-giving expression
  • the consciousness aspect seated in the head and using the nervous system as the mode or process of expression.

Through an understanding of life and consciousness, as governed by Gemini, can final release be mentally achieved.

Gemini has rulership of the thymus gland, inactive in many adults because the heart chakra is in many inactive. It will become active when ‘the “immortal brother floods the mortal brother with the light and life of God”’. Then the heart chakra (and correspondingly, group understanding/love) will function freely.

In Gemini no planet is exalted or falls because balance and the avoidance of extremes is the objective of the struggling conscious entity.

The ‘ordinary man’ in Gemini says: ‘Let instability do its work.’ The soul in Gemini says: ‘I recognise my other self and in the waning of that self, I grow and glow.’

Endnotes
:

1. It is useful to work with this idea. For practical purposes of horoscopical interpretation, consider also the planetary rulers of these signs: the orthodox rulers for personality expression; the esoteric rulers for soul expression
2. Pluto is the esoteric ruler of Pisces.
3. In horoscopy, when the sun is in the sign Gemini, the conflict is between body and soul; when Geminic is the sign on the Ascendant, it is between soul and spirit.
